The only item that you will ever see "equipped" by an NPC in EverQuest is when they are holding it. A weapon, a torch, something that is put into the main hand slot - and a dead giveaway that some rare NPCs are holding the item you need. Otherwise, as I've started in another post, it's a bit of a Schrodinger's cat situation. With the NPC dead and lying before you, it both has the Flowing Black Silken Sash you want, and doesn't have it. That Blackburrow Fang is in the Gnoll's mouth, just waiting to be plucked out, but it's also not there at all.
The reason for the dual existence is that nothing else shows up on the NPC to let you know what it's carrying. It's almost the opposite of Oblivion or Skyrim, where you can loot practically everything you see them walking around with. Which is a real shame, because there are some really awesome-sounding items that you can loot.
Ethereal Mist Chestplate. Cloak of Flames. Bone Mask of the Jarsath. Insidious Sleeves.
Now, you can see some of these on the character when they put them on, but because of the year the game came out, they are relegated to a handful of select skins per slot, with variations of color and tone.
For this piece, I thought it would be fun to experiment with what you can see, and what you can't see on this NPC.
Martar Icebear is a known NPC in the Everfrost Peaks. He carries a low-level sword and also the Cloak of the Icebear. For the level you can get it, it's a decent item. But you'll never see it - at least on your character, and let alone his. So, what if for just this piece, you could see it?
I thought about doing more like these, and maybe someday I'll go back and try to fill in the gaps that the player's imagination would have done back in the Classic Era. Until then, what you see isn't always what you'll get.
